Papa "Larry" Meunier

January 9, 1933 ~ November 23, 2020 (age 87)

Papa (Larry) Meunier

Papa (Larry) Meunier died peacefully in his home near North Pole on November 23, 2020.  He was born January 9, 1933  in Taunton, Massachusetts to Maurice and Blanche Meunier.

Papa came to Alaska in the mid 1980's with Sue, Aaron, two dogs and two cats in an old school bus he called "The Ark".  He fell in love with Alaska and it has been his home ever since.  Always a farmer and gardener, he had livestock, gardens, and a large greenhouse.  He grew and sold bedding plants, tomatoes and assorted berry bushes and fruit trees as “Papa’s Greenhouse”.  He was an active member of the Tanana Valley Farmers Market and was instrumental in moving the Market to its present location.  For several years, he served on the Board of Directors of the Tanana Valley Fair Association.  He also participated in local chapters of the Master Gardeners and Farm Bureau.  Each spring he enjoyed visiting Mrs. Hinzman's class at Joy Elementary when they were setting eggs to hatch, bringing along a chicken for the children to see.  In his later years he and his friend Charlie explored the wildlands seeking out Alaskan blueberries and other native berries that could be propagated and grown in home gardens.  Many gardens in town have fruits and berries because of Papa.

Papa touched many hearts and lives throughout our community.  He had a strong faith, quick smile and generous nature.  He taught Bible studies at the Fairbanks Rescue Mission for many years.  His home church was Badger Road Christian Fellowship but he enjoyed visiting and sharing with KJNP's Village Voice, meetings at the David Salmon Tribal Hall, and many other outreach programs.

He still has family back east including Charlotte Meunier, Maria Meunier, Eva Billings, Bill and Tammy Meunier, Tony and Annie Meunier, Marguerite and William Meehan, Robert and Patsy Meunier, Irene and Richard Bankert, Bernadette and Everett Elkins, Carol Meunier along with grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Left behind are Mama (Sue), his favorite four-legged friend Ellie, many, many friends and extended family both in Alaska and outside.

Rest in Peace Papa, your enthusiasm and love of people and the land will be missed.
