We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Blanchard Family Funeral Home
James “Jim” Carl Mitchell was born on February 26, 1935 to parents Lawrence C Mitchell and Marian M (Emmons) Mitchell. He was born in Salem, Oregon but grew up in Athens, Ohio. > Jim graduated from Athens High School in 1952, then enlisted in the U.S. Marines from 1954 to 1956. He received his BSA at Ohio University in 1960, then moved to Colorado and began working for the U.S. Forest Service. Jim retired in Arizona after 32 years, then spent time running the local food bank single handed.
In the spring of 2006, to the tune of “He Leadeth Me”, Jim made the move to Alaska. During his years in Alaska, Jim taught his granddaughters, Katie and Amy, guitar and fiddle. Many hours were spent playing music, telling stories, and passing on life lessons. He was a faithful, humble worker, willing to do things to serve other people. >
From summer 2006 to 2019 he tended the grass and flowers at Santa Claus House in North Pole, taking great pride in making everything green and getting rid of every dandelion in sight. He played music at the College Coffee House with his band and played fiddle every Sunday at church.
Jim passed away at age 87 on May 28, 2022 at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Jim is survived by his brother and sister-in-law John and Rosie Mitchell, son Daniel Mitchell, son and daughter-in-law Larry and Lisa Mitchell, granddaughters Katie Jensen and Amy Davis, and great-granddaughters Arya Jensen and Ava, Ana, and Emma Davis. He is also survived by daughter Jonie Main, grandsons Jake, John, James, and Jason Main and granddaughter Joy Main.
Jim/Dad/G-paw/Bubba was dearly loved and enjoyed by family and friends and will be greatly missed. We rejoice with him that now he has his Golden Slippers and has found his “mansion just over the hilltop” with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
There will be a memorial service at Open Door Baptist Church, 402 16th Ave, Fairbanks, AK on Tuesday, June 7th, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. to celebrate Jim’s life.
