George Jeffery Cobb, 62, of Fairbanks, Alaska, passed away on March 24, 2023 after a
prolonged illness with cancer.
George moved to Fairbanks to follow his dreams of camping, fishing, and “living off the grid.” In
1989 after graduating from UW-Madison, George, and his partner Allison Zusi, drove their truck
loaded with two dogs and all their belongings to Alaska to start a new life. He worked at Alaskan
Biological Research (ABR), Lifewater Engineering, and The Carlson Center, was a stay-at-home
dad, taxi driver, and a self-employed jack of all trades. He loved life in Alaska: being outdoors,
days spent with his daughters, fishing, hunting, gardening, beekeeping, his chickens, and
cooking for family and friends. In the 1990s George and a group of like minded musicians
started a band named STOV which brought good music, dancing, and laughter to many across
Alaska. George had a twinkle in his eye and a gift for making people feel welcome.
He is survived by his children, Shawna Zusi-Cobb & Jenna Zusi-Cobb; his former wife, Allison
Zusi; his parents, Sharon N. Cobb & George S. Cobb; his sister Jennifer C. Cobb & brother in
law Jon Cushman; their sons, Franklin & William; his beloved Aunt Claudia & cousins, Armando
& Alejandro; his loving Uncle Dick & cousin Shanna Johnson, Kimberly Murphy, and countless
other good friends, too many to name here. George’s constant companions across the years
were his dogs. He had many and each of them held a place in his heart.
Like many others George wrestled with substance abuse. The family wants to encourage others
who struggle with this illness to seek help and find peace.
