Obituary

Alan Craig Svoboda, father, papa, brother, uncle, cousin, cherished friend, accomplished traveler, ladies man, and follower of Christ went to be with the Lord Friday, February 14, 2021 surrounded with love and family.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska on September 21, 1955 Alan had a passion for hunting, playing various sports, and dancing. As a child he always had a smile and enjoyed dogsledding and working with his dad in their family’s shop.

Alan graduated from Lathrop High School in 1973 then moved on to work the slope as a heavy equipment operator. Each R&R he travelled to a new place which incited his love for travel. Alan had a special way of making friends and family everywhere he went. He had a unique way of understanding, empathizing, and connecting with people, all of whom he loved in one way or another.

In his life, Alan lived in many states working on various projects always returning to his home state. Alan had a big spirit and an even bigger personality. While he was renowned for his ability to skillfully play any sport, baseball was his true passion.

Alan was a loving father to Jocelyn Long (Svoboda) and took pride in his son-in-law Robert Franklin and bonus daughter Sydney Shriver. Alan got extreme fulfillment out of being an amazing Papa to his grandkids, Isabel, Jaxson, Triston, Noah, and Emmett, all of Fairbanks.

Alan cherished spending time with his family going on adventures no matter how small they were. Playing sports with his nephews Garrett, Darren, Brandon, and great nephew Ryan and spending time with his nieces Charla, Roxanne, Carrie and great niece Kailin.

Alan is preceded in death by parents Roger and Isabel Svoboda, sister Laurie Bear, and other relatives welcoming him to home plate. He is survived by daughter, Jocelyn Long, grandchildren Isabel Long and Jaxson Franklin, sisters Arleen Voorhees, and Audrey Svoboda (“future brother-in-law” Tim Shilling), nieces and nephews; Charla Bear (Peter Christianson), Roxanne Svoboda, Sean Bear, Garrett Voorhees, Carrie Bazilwich, Darren Bazilwich, Brandon Voorhees, great nieces and nephews; Kailin and Ryan Retynski, Kaidence and Arya Bear, Lenox Christianson, many much loved aunts and cousins in Tanana, throughout Alaska, Washington, California, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas, Florida, and all friends and family with the Loyal Order of the Moose.
