Ruth Piser, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died peacefully at Fairbanks Pioneer Home on August 2, 2018 at the age of 90. Ruth was born Ruth Margaret Schiffermuller on April 15, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York to Russell and Elsie. Though a proficient speller, her parents changed their long last name to Miller during her childhood spent in Bellerose, Queens, Long Island, New York. After graduating from Jamaica High School, Jamaica, New York, Ruth was employed by a New York publishing house. She married Robert W. Piser in Connecticut in 1948 and they had three sons, Robert, William and Thomas. They lived in Queens, NY; Towson, MD and Newark, DE. She also lived for many years in Florida and Illinois before joining her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren in North Pole in 2008.
Ruth was very involved in many church activities, in particular her ministry as Daisy the clown, performing at childrens’ and teens’ hospital wards and nursing homes. She was determined and direct in planning activities for her church groups and social programs. Ruth enjoyed social dancing and gatherings as well as being an avid ten-pin bowler. She and her friends were frequent visitors to Walt Disney World near her home in Florida. She took pride in being recognized by name by Mickey and his friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Sr. and sons Robert and Thomas and infant great granddaughter, Mary Grace.
Mourning her are her son, William (Cindy) Piser of Matteson, IL; sister Joan (Stephen) Rechner of Woodstock, CT; daughters-in-law, Carol (Robert) Piser of North Pole; Charlene (Thomas) Piser of Wilmington, DE; grandsons, Robert (Tiffany) Piser, North Pole; Barry (Tiffany) Piser of Anchorage, AK; granddaughter, Amanda (Eric) Downing of North Bend, WA; Thomas Piser of Wilmington, DE; niece, Kathleen (William) Swatkoski of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Stephen Rechner of New York, NY; great grandchildren, Jacob, Audrey, Olin, Caroline, Samuel and Robert Piser of North Pole; Cabrini and Peter Downing of North Bend, WA; and Abram and Coen Piser of Anchorage, AK and numerous cousins, their families and friends across the lower 48.
A funeral Mass celebrated by Fr. Jonathan Dellinger will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in North Pole, AK, preceded at 9:30 by prayer devotions. A reception will be held downstairs at the church following the service. Inurnment arrangements are currently being made.
The family wishes to thank her North Pole friends and many caretakers at Fairbanks Resource Agency, Anchorage and Fairbanks Pioneers Homes, and Fairbanks Memorial Hospice for their dedicated kindness and respect shown to Ruth during her illnesses. The family suggests donations in Ruth’s name to Fairbanks Memorial Hospice.
